Minimum sick leave entitlement to increase to 10 days

The Government has announced that Parliament has passed the Holidays (Increasing Sick Leave) Amendment Bill. This means that employee sick leave entitlement will increase from 5 to 10 days on the 24th July 2021.

Now is the time to check that you have the right systems in place to increase employee sick leave allocation. Employees can take sick leave if they, or a dependent, are sick or injured. An employee still needs to have worked for an employer for a minimum of six months to qualify for sick leave, and the maximum amount of accrued sick leave remains at 20 days.

Employees will get the extra five days when they reach their next sick leave entitlement date – either when they have reached six months’ employment or on their sick leave entitlement anniversary. A sick leave entitlement anniversary is 12 months after the employee was last entitled to sick leave.
