The huge value of employee appreciation
The Christmas period is in full swing and you’re all busy organising your secret Santa gifts and putting the finishing touches on your holiday plans. A big part of this time of year for many businesses is showing appreciation to employees. It may come in the form of a cash bonus, a Christmas party, or a gift; but there is one thing that can be done throughout the year to reward your successful team, and it is FREE!
Tell your valued staff members how much they are appreciated throughout the year! By all means keep the Christmas party, the gifts and the celebrations at the end of the year but add in some words of appreciation as the year progresses too. Simple acknowledgements of staff achievements throughout the year and recognizing their contribution to your business can boost morale and create a happier work force. What does a happier work force do? They stay for the long haul, and they work harder!
A recent survey by recruitment agency Hays found that an appreciated employee is an engaged employee. They also found that staff members who are engaged in their role are more likely to adhere to company values and work hard towards achieving company goals*.
So what does appreciation look like?
- Appreciation can be as simple as a “thank you” for their hard work, even if that hard work is within their job description – an employee is more likely to go above and beyond next time if they know how much their hard work means to you and your business.
- Make sure every employee knows how their role contributes to the success of the business. They are all employed by your business for a reason, let them know the reason!
- Share how you measure your business success each month, quarter or year. By sharing this information and linking it to how an employee’s success is measured everyone feels part of a team working towards a common goal.
Remember, the Christmas party is great but add in simple acknowledgement of your appreciation for employee work throughout the year to boost their engagement. It will make your business more successful.
